Finishing the School Year on a High Note

Finishing the school year on high note

School has finished already for some students taking exams, and other age groups can see the end in sight. It can be easy to wish away the time and long for the school holidays without a backward glance at what that year has brought.

Gratitude and appreciation are known to be strongly linked to happiness and wellbeing. Enjoying school doesn’t come easy to all young people and if family members also have mixed memories from school days then it is easy for a family to develop a “you just have to get through it” attitude to education. It needn’t be like that.

Educational success gives young people so much more than qualifications; they also learn life skills which will affect their confidence, relationships with others and independence.

Here are 10 top skills and experiences your child may have gained in the last year at school which deserve to be celebrated. Perhaps your child has:

• made new friends and/or kept their existing friendships alive and interesting
• learnt a new skill which they enjoy using at home not just in lessons
• helped someone else to do something they find difficult and learnt the value of caring
• made a contribution to your community or collected for a charitable cause
• discovered a really passionate interest and curiosity in a new subject
• achieved new levels of skill and mastery in a physical ability or sport
• gained a deeper understanding of their feeling and emotions and how to control them
• been creative and original with art and craft materials
• been imaginative and excited by a piece of their own original writing
• learnt new skills for working with others in a team

Hopefully your child can tell you that this year they have ticked several of the boxes and had fun doing it. You should be proud and who knows what they will do next year.
